Thunderbird is an email program for all popular platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac. It includes an integrated calendar and allows you to tag emails to make them easier to find.

Unfortunately, anyone who wants to send a newsletter with Thunderbird will have little luck. Neither is a newsletter function integrated, nor can the functionality be implemented satisfactorily via extension.

If you want to try it out, you can try the free extension Mail Merge. This allows for easy personalization of emails and a simple newsletter function, but a lot of manual work has to be done for each dispatch, and there is no automation either.

An alternative would be to reach for a service optimized for sending newsletters, for example CleverReach. The advantages are:

  • A clear list of all recipients can be viewed and edited.
  • You can create as many lists of recipients as you like.
  • To collect email addresses, you can create as many subscription forms as you want.
  • Newsletters can be created, managed, and sent easily and quickly.
  • Scheduled sending is not required.
  • Emails can be sent automatically to any list at specified intervals by creating an automatic email series.
  • The service complies with data protection laws.

There are other providers, but CleverReach is among the best. Alternatively, you can try GetResponse, a really good and reliable solution.

Thunderbird is an email client, and a good one at that. If you need features beyond that, for example, a newsletter feature, you should definitely look elsewhere. There are specialized providers that can do the job much better and even allow full automation.
